Nonviolence Training
When: Six hour training, 10 am to 4 pm
Where: Where: St. Francis Dining Hall, SE Pine & 11th Ave, Portland
Description: Mandatory nonviolence training for all of those who intend to participate in the March
20 nonviolent civil resistance.
Topics will include: non-violence as a philosophy; civil disobedience as a tool for political change;
the form and function of affinity
groups; safety and support and solidarity issues.
The workshop is free, but donations to help defray costs are welcome. Bring bag lunch and
snacks to share. Please register by the end of February so we will know how many materials to
produce.

2006 Portland International Women's Day: "Embracing Self-Expression"

Where: Portland State University Smith Center Ballroom, 1825 SW Broadway
Portland's International Women's Day will celebrate its 31st anniversary. It is estimated that over
1500 people of diverse cultures and backgrounds will come together at PSU in a celebration that
expresses the richness, beauty, and value of women and their contributions to the community.
Portland International Women's Day 2006 will feature educational workshops, art exhibits, a health
fair, entertainment, retail vendors and international food. The mission of Portland International
Women's Day is to provide opportunities for women, and the community at large, to discover
similarities and learn from the differences in an environment that is respectful, inclusive, and
supportive of the values and points of view of all women.
The facility is located on the Portland State University campus, near the streetcar line, and is
wheelchair accessible.
The event is free; however, donations are gladly accepted at the door.

Rabbi Michael Lerner:
The Left Hand of God - Taking our Country Back from the Religious Right

Description: Christ the Healer UCC is hosting Rabbi Michael Lerner, author of "The Politics of
Meaning" and "Spirit Matters." He will discuss the topic of his new book: "The Left Hand of God:
Taking our Country Back from the Religious Right." This event is free to the public, and a free-will
offering will be asked for to defray expenses. Michael is a brilliant analyst of socio-religious-
political forces as they play out on the contemporary American scene as well as an extraordinarily
fine speaker and often Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Neo-Pagans and the totally non-religious all
become powerfully inspired by what he has to say.
Buffet reception preceding the talk, downstairs at 5:30pm, Dr. Lerner will speak informally and
answer questions. The reception will be $15 and those wishing to attend are asked to RSVP at 503-

sandwich boards to purvey their message.

Forum on Iraq War: A Local Response
When: Wednesday, March 8, 6:30-8pm
Where: Emmanuel Temple Church - 5123 N Michigan - Portland
Description: State Representative Chip Shields will be hosting a Town Hall Meeting
about the War in Iraq on March 8th. He is joined by Rep. Paul Holvey whose
son is currently serving in Iraq. "We cannot let the debate subside,"
Shields comments, "It is past time to bring our troops home." Rep. Shields
introduced a resolution in the past legislative session urging Congress
and the President to develop a timeline and exit strategy for the war in
Iraq.
This is one in a series of Town Hall Meetings taking place during the
months of February though April on issues pressing to residents of House
District 43-- the district which encompasses inner North and Northeast
Portland.

Description: Portland State Conference on Darfur, Sudan and Genocide. Conference will focus on
action steps in Darfur and creating an ongoing organization for the Northwest on this issue in the
future. This Conference is part of Genocide Awareness Week.

10:00am - 5:00pm: Workshops: Workshops will focus on Armenia, Guatemala, Holocaust,
Rwanda, Uganda, and public health effects of genocide, warning signs, hate ideology, etc.

End the War - Start the Sing-in

Description: Community wide Peace Song Sing-Along with the Peace and Justice Singers from
First Unitarian. Learn and practice peace songs to raise the roof at the rally. We want a thousand

Reflective Peace Offering: The Heart of Peace

Description: Living Earth is offering this candlelight program of music, poetry, and silence. All are
welcome to come together in community to reflect on our sorrow at the suffering created by the US
war in Iraq and all war, our opposition to the futility of war, and our passionate longing for real
peace.
Musical performers include Sky in the Road, soprano Amelia Scheider, Silver and Strings.
There is no charge for this event. Donations to support Living Earth and the peace events on March
19 are welcome but not required.

Day of Lobbying
When: Friday, March 17, starting at 10:00am
Description: At 10 am groups of constituents will visit Representatives
Blumenauer, Wu, Hooley, and Baird (WA) and
Washington Senators Murray and Cantwell's offices to present a letter
that will outline a plan to end the war in Iraq. At these meetings
we will be asking them to introduce legislation based on the outline.
At 11 am we will do the same at Wyden's office.
Meetings still pending with Smith, DeFazio and Walden.
We are still looking for more people to participate in these meetings.

2nd Annual VegFest: A Compassionate Living Fair

Where: First Unitarian Church, SW 12th Ave. and Main St., Portland
Description: In many places in the world, the new year begins in the spring. It's a time of new
beginnings that might include eating healthier foods and wanting to create less of an impact on
Mother Earth. To help everyone achieve these goals and more, Northwest VEG is organizing a
VegFest with First Unitarian Church's Community for Earth Group, In Defense of Animals,
Natural Awakenings Magazine, and Blossoming Lotus Restaurant-Vegan World Fusion Cuisine.
For an admission of $5, visitors can sample delicious food. Different local chefs will conduct
food demonstrations and prepare entrees, side dishes, and desserts. In addition, five great speakers
will include nationally known Howard Lyman, a.k.a. the "Mad Cowboy," registered nutritionist
George Eisman (compliments of Farm Sanctuary), and Bo Rinaldi, owner of Blossoming Lotus
Restaurant and co-author of Vegan World Fusion Cuisine. The event will also feature several
nonprofits in areas that promote safe foods, the environment, and compassion toward all living
beings.
