Portland Says: Bring Our War $$ Home!Dear Portlanders Several local peace groups have gotten together to ask City Council to pass a resolution calling on Congress to "Bring our war $$ home." NEW- JULY 2014 Based on the January 2012 resolution (see below), local groups are asking Council to reaffirm its position to the federal government, that money should be spent on local human needs, not war! Read the July 28 2014 letter to Council and draft resolution and download a petition to get involved. The original idea grew from grassroots movements in Maine and elsewhere, that culminated in the passage of a resolution by the US Conference of Mayors in June, which Portland's Mayor, Sam Adams, supported. (The resolution was introduced by Eugene, OR Mayor Kitty Piercy.) On Janaury 12, Portland City Council voted unanimously to adopt a resolution offered by Mayor Adams after testimony from members of the community speaking to issues of health care, housing, jobs, education, and the environment, including many from the supporting organizations of the Council campaign. The vote was 3-0. (Click here for a text version of the resolution.)
In January 2012 PJW's Iraq Affinity Group supported a
grassroots
effort to also bring a War $$
Home Resolution to the Multnomah County
Board of Commissioners. (Click here for a .pdf version of the proposed
resolution.) The effort was also supported by
Portland
Peaceful Response Coalition, Oregon Wildlife Federation, Jewish Voice
for Peace-Portland, Code Pink Portland, Peace Action Committee of the
First Unitarian Church, Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility, and
Occupy Portland (as of 1/23/12).
Thank you
